As a rheumatologist, Dr. Budd’s research has focused primarily on mechanisms of autoimmunity and immune cell death. His accomplishments include the identification of memory T cells following infection, mechanisms of immune cell death by death receptors and proteases known as caspases, and the identification of γδ T cells in Lyme arthritis. Dr. Budd also studies the autoimmune disease lupus and how augmented T lymphocyte homeostatic proliferation in this disorder can promote an autoimmune diathesis.
