Rory Waterman is currently Professor of Chemistry at the University of Vermont (UVM). Since starting at UVM in 2006, he has developed a research program in inorganic and organometallic chemistry with the largest theme across scientific projects being the discovery of more efficient and sustainable chemistries in service of catalysis and materials science. He has also engaged in service or scholarly work relating to teacher pre- and in-service professional development, new chemistry faculty professional development, curricular innovation in chemistry, and DEIB efforts in science.

His work has garnered recognition including a Sloan Fellowship, Cottrell Scholar Award, Humboldt Fellowship (2013-14), Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Fellowship (2022-23), and as Fellow of each the Royal Society of Chemistry, the American Chemical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
