Our Mission

VASE was established for three purposes:

  • To recognize outstanding achievement and contributions in the broadly defined areas of science and/or engineering.

  • To foster a deeper understanding and promote discourse on scientific and technical matters among the citizens of the State of Vermont.

  • To provide expert and impartial technical advice to the people and the government of the State of Vermont.

The State of Vermont chartered the Vermont Academy of Science and Engineering (VASE) to honor the accomplishments of scientists and engineers, promote the interests of science and engineering within the state, educate Vermonters about the importance of those fields, and help state government resolve scientific and engineering problems.

The Vermont Academy of Science and Engineering (VASE) was founded in 1995 by, and reports to, the Vermont Technology Council following a recommendation of the Vermont Science and Technology Plan of December 1994.

VASE Science Statement

“Without scientific progress no amount of achievement in other directions can ensure our health, prosperity, and security as a nation in the modern world.” Vannevar Bush

Research in science and engineering begins where textbooks end. Scientists seek to understand and quantify the unknown, often coming upon unexpected results that spawn new hypotheses and new approaches to test them. As Madam Curie once said, "Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood."

The pursuit of science and engineering requires unstifled creativity. No one understood this better than Albert Einstein who noted that “the intuitive mind is a sacred gift, and the rational mind is a faithful servant.” He emphasized the importance of nurturing a child’s natural curiosity and creative imagination.

VASE strives to engage young people in solving the Universe’s puzzles: such is the creative process, and the thrill of doing science. The various projects we fund stimulate the astonishing, unclouded minds of the inquisitive young. VASE supports a broad spectrum of hands-on projects in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). These experiences, even if brief, can awaken a life-long passion in STEM fields.
